Exactly how does the PulseSecure™ system work?
The PulseSecure™ system wiring is pulsed with high voltage impulses every 1.2 seconds. The impulses are very short duration discharges that last less than1/300,000,000 of a second. These impulses are monitored by the control system and in the event of the PulseSecure™ system being cut, shorted, loaded or tampered with alarms are generated.
What voltage goes through the PulseSecure™ system?
The pulses are typically between 6 to 10,000 volts and regulated safe less than 5 Joules of energy when measured into a 500 ohm load in accordance with IEC 60335 and BS EN60335-2-76-2005.
Is the system safe?
Yes, the pulses created by the energizer, components system design, and installation comply fully with product safety standards IEC 60335, BS EN60335-2-76-2005, BS1722 part 17 and Harper Chalice Group Limited code of practice.
What is BS EN 60335-2-76-2005?
BS EN 60335-2-76-2005 is the European Standard for Electric Fence energisers and their safe application. This standard has been adopted by most European Countries. In 1993 the British standards adopted EN 61011 in its entirety as the British standards which were superseded by BS EN 60335-2-76-2005.
What happens if a child or elderly person comes into contact with the Pulsed Wires System?
In accordance with the Code of Practice and minimum Quality Standards, all systems are designed and installed to minimise the risk of accidental contact, with all ages and infirmity considered. The impulses give a short sharp regulated safe but painful electric shock. The impulses are regulated safe in accordance with BS EN 60335-2-76-2005.
What are the basic safety requirements of BS EN 60335-2-76-2005 and BS1722 part 17 (formerly PAS 47)?
The maximum energy that can be produced by the security system energiser, is limited by design to a maximum of five joules into a load of 500 ohms ( typical resistance of human body ).
The energiser is designed and required to comply with this output, even under abnormal operating conditions such as component failure. The overall system is specified with due consideration given to the duty of care associated with such systems. This includes clearances, numbers of wires, the use of warning signs, etc.

What are Harper Chalice Group Limited Code of Practice and Quality Standards?
As responsible manufacturers of Electrified Perimeter Security Systems we have a policy of only making the systems available via our network of Accredited Dealers. All Dealers have an agreement in which they commit only to design, install and maintain Electrified Perimeter Security Systems in accordance with Harper Chalice Group Limited Code of Practice and Quality Standards. The installation standards and code of practice addresses Safety and “Duty of Care” to ensure that the system meets and exceeds the requirements of all National and International safety standards applicable.
How does Harper Chalice Group Limited ensure that their Code of Practice and Quality Standards are complied with?
Installations are inspected and Certified by Harper Chalice Group Limited.
Is the system legal?
Yes, the system is legal because the system design, components and installation comply with the requirements of BS1722 part 17, BS EN 60335-2-76-2005. and are installed with appropriate duty of care in accordance with Harper Chalice Group Limited Installation Standards and Code of Practice.
PulseSecure™ systems are “Secured by Design” “Police Preferred Specification” and are often put forward by Crime prevention officers as potential solutions for sites with perimeter problems or potential risks.

What maintenance is required?
We recommend a minimum of two routine maintenance inspections per year to ensure optimum system performance and reliability. We recommend that the operator inspects the fence line weekly and keeps it clear of vegetation, weeds and litter.
Is the system prone to false alarms due to changes in the weather, heavy rain, fog, snow, high winds, falling leaves, wet paper bags, wild animals, etc.?
No, unlike other perimeter systems Harper Chalice Group Limited’s Electrified Perimeter Security System technology and signal processing ignores these forms of interference.
Why does the system not generate an alarm if an animal or human touches the pulsed wires?
Anyone who touches the system, when it is armed, is repelled by a short, sharp, painful but regulated safe electric shock. Only if someone attacks, tries to climb through or tampers with the system, are alarms generated.
What about false alarms?
False alarms are virtually unheard of because of the system quality and proven design. Unique electronics and system components. Designed, installed and maintained by Accredited Dealers in accordance with Harper Chalice Group Limited Code of Practice and Quality Standards.
What happens if the mains fail?
All our systems have standby power supplies. In the event of mains failure rechargeable batteries power the system for a minimum of 10 hours. If a longer period is required the size of the standby power supplies can be increased.
What are the running costs of a typical Pulsed Fence system?
A typical system consumes less than 50 watts fully armed, HV pulses on.
Is the system compatible with other security systems and equipment?
Yes, Harper Chalice Group Limited electrified perimeter security systems can be installed as a stand-alone system or directly interfaced with any other type of intruder alarm, CCTV, access control or integrated security system for local or remote control and monitoring.
Can gates be protected?
Yes, all forms of security opening, sliding and power gates can be fully protected with the system.
Can the operator gain access through the gate without getting a shock?
Yes, the system is designed to allow the key holder access to the gate locks and bolts without coming into contact with the system.
Is it possible for the system to be on and monitor the perimeter security without the high voltage feature?
Yes, Harper Chalice Group Limited PROTECTOR system is fully monitored HV/LV system for the protection of storage yards, car parks and sites such as garden centres and factories, where authorised people can be exposed to the system without the risk of the high voltage feature. During the daytime the system is fully monitored using a unique LV system. When the premises are vacated the system can be armed with the additional feature of the high voltage deterrent.
Is the system zoned for alarm management and response?
Yes, zones can be configured to meet with the exact site requirements, i.e. CCTV camera zones, programmable delayed zones for exit entry routes, gates, etc.
What is a maximum electrical zone length?
In accordance with BS1722 part 17 it is recommended that the maximum zone length does not exceed 150 metres or 300 ohms (resistive value of HT wire).
Can the system be used in conjunction with CCTV, security lighting and other alarm monitoring or annunciation?
Yes, the zone alarm outputs can be used to trigger or operate all forms of alarm monitoring, annunciation or signaling systems.
What is the authorities attitude to electric security fences?
Harper Chalice Group Limited PulseSecure™ systems are Secured By Design, Police Preferred Specification.
Do insurers accept or specify the fence system?
Yes, most major insurance companies accept the installation of PulseSecure™ systems and some are now specifying the same for the protection of appropriate sites.

Is planning consent required for the system?
Planning consent is only required if you are proposing to install a system that exceeds the local security fence height restrictions. If you are replacing an existing fence/system with a PulseSecure™ system of the same height. Planning consent would not be required.
Can the system be operated remotely?
Yes, If required the system can be supplied by operation of key switches, keypads, key fobs, Wireless remote controls etc. Alternatively the system can be controlled via a PC based system and operated/monitored remotely via a computer network or the internet.
Will birds or other wildlife be affected by the system?
No, electric fences that comply to the same safety standards are used by farmers, zoo’s, nature reserves etc all around the World.
What happens if pets or wild animals come into contact with the system?
The system will not harm them, they will be repelled and learn not to go near it. (Same as animals in a farmers field contained by an electric fence).
Can you hear the system when it’s on?
Sometimes you may hear the fence clicking every 1.2S, especially if it’s raining or damp and there is vegetation or litter on touching the fence.
Can the electric impulses jump very far?
It is recommended that the electric fence wires are at least 2cm away from any metal or grounded structure. In certain circumstances if the impulsed electric fence wires are near to a metal object (less than 20cm) that is grounded, the impulse may jump across to the grounded material.
Can you hold onto the electric fence wires when the system is on?
If you touch the electric fence wires when it pulses you will be repelled.
